THE MISSING MUSIC……a question…….

Whatever happened to Folk Music?   We’ve got venues here in Springfield where one can go and listen to many different types of music. Country, Roots, Rockabilly, Rock, Celtic, Bluegrass, even a little jazz. Where’s the Folk Music?  Not the “traditional” or “indigenous” type from here in the Ozarks, songs like Soldier’s Joy, Cripple Creek, or Jesse James, but the folk music that spurred changes in our society. Songs like Pete Seeger’s ”Where Have All The Flowers Gone,”  or Woody Guthrie’s  “This Land Is Your Land,” or Phil Ochs’s “Bound For Glory.”

This music had a message, it said something. Heaven knows there’s plenty of topics new folk singers could write about. In addition to hearing music that might make one think when’s the last time you were in a club and the singer asked you to join in?  When’s the last time you listened to new musicians trying out new material that was possibly challenging to your social or political viewpoint?

I’m curious as to how many folks would, if they had a venue like this to visit, spend a couple hours listening, or even bring their guitar and take a shot at making their own social comment?

There are only a few of the great folk singers left, shouldn’t this genre of music be preserved?  Shouldn’t we have someone out there asking us Which Side Are You On?

Domino Kings & Wayne “The Train”

“I’m the best musician in the country!” “Yeah, but how are ya in the city?”
- Moe and Larry (Three Stooges)

Friday night the best musicians were inside Kansas City’s Knuckleheads!

Missouri’s own, original, Domino Kings opened up the night, followed by the one and only  Wayne “The Train” Hancock!

A big thank you to the Rockabilly Mood Swing  for including the show in their listing! A big thank you to Kansas City Rockabilly to for inviting folks out! And a big thank you to the masses who came out to support live music! (One faithful fan drove all the way from Oklahoma!)

Christmas Is A Coming!

When I’m feeling blue, when I’m feeling low,
I start to think about the happiest man I know.
Now he doesn’t mind the snow, he doesn’t mind the rain,
But all December you will hear him at your window pane,

Singing again and again and again and again and again…

I hear Bing Crosby and I can smell the Christmas tree! I feel the prickly pine needles that stuck my fingers as a child while hanging ornaments. We listened to a Bing Crosby Christmas record every year while decorating the tree. When that record plays, or even a non-vinyl re-release on the radio, the music unlocks more than memories in my mind. While the music plays it’s like I can experience the memories as lucidly as if they were real. The only thing more magical than Christmas, is music!

Christmas is a coming, the egg is in the nog.
Please give a friendly man a friendly little dog.
If you haven’t got a friendly dog, a friendly cat will do,
If you haven’t got a friendly cat may God bless you!
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you!
If you haven’t got a friendly cat may God bless you!
.
Christmas is a coming, the lights are on the tree.
How about a turkey leg for dear old me?
If you haven’t got a turkey leg, a turkey wing will do.
If you haven’t got a turkey wing may God bless you!
God bless you, gentlemen, God bless you!
If you haven’t got a turkey wing may God bless you!

Merry Christmas and May God Bless You!

Luttrell’s Auction Barn

The holidays are upon us, and I recommend packing the kids in the car, picking up Grandma, and taking the whole family to a music show at Luttrell’s Auction Barn!

Luttrell’s Auction Barn is the only venue in the Springfield area regularly showcasing the Ozarks’ rich heritage of bluegrass and country music in a family friendly, alcohol free environment. Luttrell’s features a variety of professional acts from local artists to regional and nationally touring groups.

If you don’t believe me, listen to my own Grandmother! She said herself, “It’s a great feeling to be able to go the auction barn and visit with my daughter, my granddaughter, and my grandson and hear good, fun, toe-tapping music!”

Owner, Don Luttrell, got the idea for adding music to his auction business back in the early 1970s when he caught a special performance by Ozark Jubilee entertainer Harold Morrison at the auction barn. Don explained that after he took ownership and the auction side was up and running he thought, “Why not?” Bluegrass was first to take the stage on Fridays in June of 2007. The enthusiastic response from audiences led to the addition of Saturday night shows, and then the inclusion of country acts, and even a little bit of blues from time to time.

Show to Catch!

Road trip? If you don’t live in St. Louis, then pack up the wagon and plan to hit the highway for a Sunday drive on the 21st! Neil Young fans can wish him a Happy 65th today and celebrate next weekend at Off Broadways tribute, 45 Years of Ragged Glory: A Special Tribute to Neil Young! Kevin Renick and Friends will join The Blue Lemmings and Dale Hanabarger to sing a Borrowed Tune or two from the legend.

This fall I had the good fortune of working with Renick (above) and friend Theadore Moniak (below) in Springfield, MO when they shared the bill with The Domino Kings at historic Lindberg’s Tavern. I doubt you will find a more loyal and sincere Neil Young fan than Renick. While I can’t predict which special tunes Renick will share, I am confident they will ring true!
